Biomimetic nanostructures with lipids/nanomaterials
This presentation will focus on lipid-based biomimetic assemblies of nanomaterials and their applications. Biological systems interact with their environments by creating ion gradients, membrane electric potentials or proton motive force to accomplish complex task on the nanometer length scale. The creation of biomimetic structures based on low-dimensional nanomaterials and lipid membranes will provide a unique platform for achieving functionalities of biological machines and mimicking nature. Low-dimensional nanomaterials such as silicon nanowires, carbon nanotubes, graphene and molybdenum disulfide are of significant interest due to the novel properties not present in bulk materials as well as characteristic dimensions comparable to the size of biological molecules. Fabricated nanomaterials integrated with biomaterials such as lipid membrane and their constitutive proteins to create biomimetic assemblies were created. This presentation will introduce examples to connect the worlds of biology and electronics. Transmembrane carbon nanotube pores as biological ion channels analogs and a bioelectronics platform for integration of membrane protein functionality based on low-dimensional lipid bilayer will be presented.
